The Royal Oak in Wantage is a justifiably popular pub
with a distinguished history. It was formed from three
cottages on the corner of Portway and Newbury Street,
and is opposite St Mary's College. It is known for its
wide selection of superbly kept real ales which attract
a wide range of locals: all Wantage (and further afield)
life is here, with artists and artisans, professionals,
eccentrics and just plain drinkers enjoying the convivial
atmosphere and fine ales.
Paul Hexter, the landlord, has supported the West Berkshire
Brewery since its inception, and two of the regular beers
are named after him in recognition. Dr Hexter's Wedding
Ale was specially brewed to celebrate his wedding to Frankie
five years ago, and has been the pub's stock best bitter
ever since. Dr Hexter's Healer Ale is a stronger but equally
popular beer.
The pub itself has two bars; the left, smaller bar features
a table football table and a huge selection of naval memorabilia
(and the gents). Monthly meetings of the Royal Naval Assocation
are held here, but on Fridays and at weekends it is used
mainly by younger customers . The lounge bar (and the
ladies) is on the right. This is the larger of the two,
and includes half a dozen bar stools (see below).

Above the bar is a huge array of pump clips, representing
some of the hundreds of beers Paul has featured in recent
years.
The Oak has limited accommodation, with rooms available
to rent for long-stay visitors. (The pub does not do bed
and breakfast, however.)
The Royal Oak has 2 darts team that play in local leagues,
